Located in Birmingham, AL partners Rob Howland, Steve Hines, and Roy Gilbert actively seek investment opportunities in companies that they feel they can help nurture and grow, with an eventual exit in mind. Emergent has an emphasis in the tech space, but is willing to look at opportunities in any vertical that makes sound business sense. The Emergent partners have broad ranges of experience in technology, finance, real estate, and accounting, and have multiple exits under their belts.
After years of experience in public accounting as a CPA, Steve started a mortgage company called Southern Capital Resources and sold it to a bank after operating it for 16 years. He then started a sporting goods apparel and accessories company and exited it, as well, after a few years. Steve loves God, loves his family, and loves his band - The Onlys.
Roy W. Gilbert is a Birmingham native with over 20 years experience founding and partnering with businesses in the startup sector - with a primary focus on operational and executive management oversight in the tech and software industries. He has successfully exited several of these entities, the latest being a large infrastructure and datacenter company headquartered in the Birmingham area.
Rob began his career with Capstone in 1993. In 2000, Rob was promoted to President of Capstone Properties. In 2006, Rob was promoted to Chief Operating Officer where he was responsible for such matters as accounting, insurance, finance, treasury functions, asset disposition, and other significant functions. In January 2012, following the restructuring of The Capstone Companies, Rob became one of the three principals of Capstone Collegiate Communities, LLC.
